After the establishment of the Tzu Chi General
Hospital, the foundation's next goal was to establish a comprehensive
Tzu Chi University. Its general mission is as follows: "With
the Tzu Chi College of Medicine as the foundation, purifying human
minds and all society as the ideal, and a first-class seat of
learning as the goal, we intend to build a modern, comprehensive
university with the greatest potentials. We will build in eastern
Taiwan a monument to the spirit of culture and education, a college
town filled with broad vision and great humanistic talents."
The Tzu Chi College of Medicine was established
in 1994, and in 1998 it was upgraded to the Tzu Chi College of
Medicine and Humanities. It was expected to be upgraded again
to Tzu Chi University in 2001.
