For the sake of nurturing excellent nurses,
as well as hoping to provide more family-like attention for students
so that they could enjoy a warm, home-like atmosphere, Master
Cheng Yen established the Yi Te Mother/Sister Association at the
Tzu Chi Junior College of Nursing on October 25, 1989. She personally
selected Tzu Chi commissioners to assume the roles of alternate
family members for the students-older, married ones become "mothers"
and younger, single ones become "big sisters." She hoped
that through their interactions with the Tzu Chi commissioners,
students could be properly influenced and naturally develop a
graceful aura and proper demeanor.
Currently, the Yi Te Mother/Sister Association
has three members to a unit, and each unit takes care of eight
to ten students. They meet regularly once a month.
Master Cheng Yen established the Yi Te
Mother/Sister Association with the hope that during the school
year, whether dealing with practical, emotional or psychological
problems, the Yi Te mothers and big sisters could always offer
their maturity and valuable life experiences to help students
develop healthy and wholesome characters. The Master believed
that teaching the students to properly perform their various roles
in life was a very important mission.
