Community Volunteerism

(Translated by Tony Chen)

Hurricane Herbert swept Taiwan on July 31, 1996, causing tremendous damage. After this disaster, Master Cheng Yen again urged us to organize community volunteering.

In order to strengthen the concept of community volunteering, the Master regrouped the Tzu Chi commissioners according to different communities and geographical locations. She instructed the commissioners to lead their communities in improving relationships among neighbors and encouraging them to further assist in community volunteer work. Through such activities, members of the communities could get to know every neighbor better, decrease feelings of apathy towards each other, and be able to provide assistance in times of emergency. We sincerely hope that through the establishment of the community volunteer system, the spirit, concept and culture of Great Love can be brought to every community and make this world a Pure Land for everyone.
