"For Buddhism and for all living beings"
was Venerable Master Yin Shun's exhortation to Mas-ter Cheng Yen.
In 1963, at the Hui Jih Lecture Hall on Lungchiang Street in Taipei,
Master Yin Shun accepted a young girl named Wang Chin-yun as his
disciple and gave her the dharma name Cheng Yen. At that time,
he said, "Since you have left home to become a nun, you must
con-stantly be committed to Buddhism and to all living beings."
According to her mentor's instructions, Master
Cheng Yen has always been totally committed to reviving the
original philosophies of Buddhism and to lighting the "heart
lamps" in all people, which then developed into the Tzu
Chi missions.
