A doctor once said the reason he came to serve
in the Tzu Chi Hospital was that he was drawn by Master Cheng
Yen's Three Hearts. What are the Three Hearts of Master Cheng
Yen? The first is the Master's Heart of Determination. To build
a hospital was so very difficult. With resolute determination,
the Master was finally able to complete it. I was very moved by
her persistence.
The second is her Heart of Compassion. Society
has produced so many philanthropists: Tzu Chi commissioners, Honorary
Board members and foundation members. They all contribute their
money and efforts and never ask for anything in return. Each goes
about his/her tasks with great joy. Take the example of the commissioners:
they go out to solicit donations and visit the poor, and they
still they return to work as volunteers. Despite the hard work
or negative comments by some people, their faces always wear smiles.
It was this Heart of Compassion that captivated me. If I ever
treat my patients without that Heart of Compassion or if I do
not make the best use of my abilities, then I should feel ashamed
of myself.
The third is the Heart of Faith. Some of my
colleagues here came from bustling Taipei. They actually gave
up their high salaries in Taipei and came to Tzu Chi because they
were full of hope and faith. I was touched, so I came as well!
