Mission and Occupation

(Translated by Mike Lee, Northern CA)

Common people all have "occupations," but they do not necessarily have "missions," and they are not very clear about the difference between the two.

Master Cheng Yen feels that an occupation is passively working to make a living. You go to work and punch the clock. As long as you arrive on time and don't leave early, then you've fulfilled all your responsibilities. However, a mission has no office hours and no need for time cards, yet every minute and every second you perform your duties. Everything springs from your commitment.
