Tzu Chi's "Four Avoidance Soup"

(Translated by Mike Lee)

In order to remind Tzu Chi people to remain alert on the path of spiritual cultivation, Wang Tuan-cheng, vice-president of the Tzu Chi Foundation, made reference to the four behaviors forbidden by Confucius in The Analects: "Avoid emotion, avoid capriciousness, avoid obstinacy, and avoid ego."

"Avoid emotion" means not to take action based on emotional impulse.

"Avoid capriciousness" means not be overly arbitrary in judgment.

"Avoid obstinacy" means not to be excessively obstinate or attached to one's opinion.

"Avoid ego" means not to be excessively egocentric.

The "Four Avoidance Soup" contains maxims for individual self-improvement, and it can also be a standard for measuring whether an organization has a high degree of unity and single-mindedness.
