Tzu Chi's "Four Spirituality Soup"

(Translated by Mike Lee)

Tzu Chi's "Four Spirituality Soup" is made from a blend of four "mind medicines": contentment, gratitude, understanding and accommodation. It is a famous prescription used by Tzu Chi people for specifically treating interpersonal disagreements or conflicts between people. It is also an ideal remedy that can be self-prescribed to bring harmony to everyday life. The connotations are as follows:

Contentment: to be always satisfied, to be at peace with whatever one encounters, and to carry no thoughts of greed.

Gratitude: to appreciate the kind favors bestowed by others.

Understanding: to use kind motives and kind thoughts to comprehend and deal with events in daily life.

Accommodation: to be broad-minded enough to accept everything.

Tzu Chi people feel that the "Four Spirituality Soup" is very beneficial to the mind and the body. It should be carried at all times for use. This medicine is moderate in nature, and when one takes it, it can be beneficial both to oneself and to others. It is also the mode of interaction exercised by Tzu Chi people as they learn to demand more of themselves.
