CHIA YI, Taiwan-

Zhong Min Huang is the youngest volunteer
at the Da Lin Tzu Chi Hospital. At the age of 11, he vowed to
devote himself to helping others. He spends his summer break
as a volunteer in the hospital helping patients with admission
procedures.
Zhong Min is only in the fifth grade. He still
needs the love and care of his parents, yet he is able to understand
how to devote himself to help others and be grateful. Wearing
the Tzu Chi volunteer vest, he is a happy and dependable young
volunteer. To date he has volunteered at the Tzu Chi hospital
five times. He has a full schedule. When speaking about joining
the Tzu Chi family, Zhong Min is very grateful to Master Cheng
Yen. His parents have not punished him and his siblings since
they have joined Tzu Chi. Before, they would beat him with their
belts for not doing his homework well.
Ming Yue Huang, the Tzu Chi Hospital Volunteer
Coordinator, has recognized the hard work of Zhong Min. Zhong
Min shares his good spirits and smiles with others. He was very
responsive. For example, when he saw an elderly patient who
was not feeling well because she is unable to move her leg,
he held her hand to take her pulse. He told her that her pulse
was good and that she would get well soon. After hearing that,
the woman chuckled.
Prescribing three medicines
Zhong Min often " prescribes" three
medicines for the patients: happiness, enjoyment and a smile.
He reminds patients to take them regularly. All the patients
testified that his medicine was most helpful. Zhong Min wishes
all the patients to get well soon.
At the Little Sun Elder Care Center,
Zhong Min asked the elders what they were doing when they were
his age. Although he got different answers, his question brought
laughter to all of them. Ms. Huang stressed that volunteering
was the best way to learn. "There are good people with
good knowledge everywhere. It is rewarding to show Zhong Min
the right way to move forward in his life and be a happy volunteer."
she commented.
