A gift of love
from the Pan sisters
One can now see a
brand new piano when entering the Tzu Chi Hospital in Hualien.
One day in early December of 2002, a brand new piano was shipped
from Keelung to Hualien. It was a gift from the Pan family's
three sisters, who are all Keelung Tzu Chi volunteers. Their
donation helped make Tzu Chi Hospital unique. Today, volunteers
in the hospital take turns playing the piano, enhancing the
atmosphere in the hospital lobby..
That afternoon the
piano was delivered and patients were invited to the lobby to
enjoy the beautiful music. Some said the music uplifted their
spirits, while others said it was like stepping into a piano
bar.

Tzu Chi volunteers
signed up the shifts to play the new piano. The music selection
included Tzu Chi music, children's nursery rhymes, popular songs,
favorite oldies, and even special requests.
Some students from Tzu Chi University
play on weekends while others have signed up for regular shifts.
Volunteer Chien-Ju Liu plays every day. And Ching-huei Huang,
who just returned from Germany studying music, plays at 10 a.m.
every Tuesdays and Thursdays. Huang stated modestly that playing
piano was not her major, and she had to adapt herself to playing
popular music from her classical music training.
