HUALIEN, Taiwan - Formerly
conjoined Philippine twins, Lea and Rachel, who were successfully
separated at Tzu Chi Hospital in Hualien in June 2003, visited
Tzu Chi Elementary School on August 11, for a celebration
of their newly independent lives.
The twins were greeted by a big hug from
the principal upon their arrival, who led all the students
to welcome the twins. Most people could only differentiate
them by the color of their shoes.
Lea and Rachel were presented an honorary
alumni golden badge from the school. The twins are the first
recipients of the "Tzu Chi Toddler Club," a scholarship
fund from the students of the school. Students from Tzu Chi
Elementary School will write to the twins and save some of
their pocket money for the educational fund.
Before the twin's separation operation,
the students of Tzu Chi Elementary paid them a visit. The
way kids communicate using body language was so interesting
and heart warming. As for this time, it was Lea and Rachel
who were visiting the students, walking in the butterfly corridor
and enjoying the Hualien summer. At the end of the visit a
little boy was so unwilling to part with Lea and Rachel and
announced loudly that, "I would like to kiss both of
you!"
