Why is one born into the world? How should one live to bring value to one’s life?

In search of an answer, Dharma Master Cheng Yen embarked on the path of Buddhism. Through a serendipitous encounter, Master Cheng Yen met Ven. Yin Shun, who accepted her as his disciple and told her these simple words: Work for the sake of Buddhism and all living beings. Though the meeting was brief, Master Cheng Yen took those words to heart and made them the unspoken motivation behind her future actions and the underlying mission of the Tzu Chi Foundation.

This DVD presents the history of the relationship between Master Cheng Yen and Ven. Yin Shun, their common belief that Buddhism was meant to be applied to daily life, and how they continue to expound and carry out the teachings of the Buddha from one generation to the next, mobilizing millions of people globally to walk on the Bodhisattva Path of benefiting the world.

Vegetarianism
Published 2004

Everything in nature is interconnected. What we eat not only affects our physical and mental well-being but also directly and indirectly affects the health of our planet and all its inhabitants.

Because of our eating habits, animals are being exploited in masses. Yet we human beings too suffer the consequences. SARS, mad cow disease, and the avian flu are all part of a downward spiral of negative consequences, along with global climate change and the destruction of our environment. It is time to become aware that our diet does have an impact on life on Earth.

Master Cheng Yen believes that with wisdom, one will come to realize that the function of food is to sustain our life and we need not take the lives of other living creatures to meet that purpose. A vegetarian diet not only keeps one healthy and the environment healthy, but is also a direct expression of compassion.
