2,500 tons of rice and 150 temporary classrooms
being readied for Iran
BAM, Iran-After completing
emergency distributions and assessment, Taiwan Buddhist Tzu
Chi Foundation begins mid- and long-term aid and reconstruction
programs for quake-hit areas of Iran.
One hundred and fifty temporary classrooms
will be erected within two months for the 9,000 surviving
students, about half of the number of students before the
earthquake. The Taiwan Council of Agriculture will donate
2,500 tons of rice to Iran through Tzu Chi. The relief team
will then personally distribute three months' allotment of
rice to over 80,000 quake survivors on March 21 before Noruz,
the Persian new year.
Medical facilities in Bam have been completely
destroyed by the quake, with only half the medical professionals
surviving. With the assistance of the local government, Tzu
Chi will construct an "Emergency Medical Command Center"
equipped with telecommunication devices to continue with around-the-clock
assistance and meet the demands of emergency medical needs.
The second Tzu Chi relief team, which includes
doctors as well as building planners, will assess a long-term
assistance plan for the reconstruction of schools and other
facilities in Baravat. The team will depart for Iran as soon
as they receive their visas.
