Great love remains seven years after flood
relief in Erzhou
ERZHOU, CHINA - Tzu Chi volunteers first
arrived in Erzhou in 1998, after a large flood occurred there
in China's Hubei province. Their volunteer work, however,
has evolved from distributing flood relief material to providing
scholarships to students. Earlier this month, local teachers
gave a warm welcome to Tzu Chi volunteers, who awarded scholarships
to over 600 students.
Tang Shiao Yen lives with her mother in
Hubei Province in China. Her brothers work in the city with
their father, instead of attending school. Thanks to a scholarship
from Tzu Chi, Tang Shiao Yen is now able to continue her education.
As Mother's Day approaches, she expressed her appreciation
to her mother. Tang Shiao Yen is one of over 600 students
that Tzu Chi is assisting in Lingjiang Village of near Wuhan
City. In 1998, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived to give aid after
a flood, and have been continuing to provide assistance since.
This time, volunteers were at Niu Duen Junior High School
to award Tzu Chi scholarships. The scholarships are intended
to help children in their studies and also elevate their living
standards.
