Meningiocele Successfully Treated
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Illness is a root
of suffering. Many Indonesians are living their lives in poverty
because of unstable financial situations. When illness then
falls upon their doorsteps, the results can be devastating
because it may be impossible to pay for expensive medical
treatments.
Jaenal
Abidin Paisen's parents live in Indonesia and run their own
small business. Their business provides enough income to support
the essentials in life. However, it was then discovered that
Jaenal suffers from Meningiocele, a herniation which caused
brain fluids to amass and bulge around his nose and which
require surgery to remove. Upon hearing the news, his mother
grew very distressed because their income did not allow for
such extra expenses. When she met a Tzu Chi relief team, however,
her hopes rose.
Jaenal
had been undergoing treatment at a general hospital since
January, 2005. However, in May Jaenal had an operation with
the support of the local Tzu Chi branch. Jaenal was overjoyed
after the successful operation.
Currently, Jaenal is staying at Jonggol,
Indonesia; he is full of self confidence and his nose is back
to its proper size. He has future hopes of becoming a business
man.
Medicine is one of the four missions of
Tzu Chi, a Buddhist international charity relief organization
founded by Dharma Master Cheng Yen. It stemmed from the mission
of Charity when it became clear that poverty and illness are
often intertwined.
