Malaysia Beach Clean Up
SEREMBAN,
Malaysia - One hundred and forty Tzu Chi volunteers took part
in a beach clean-up at the locally famous Port Dickson Beach.
The beach clean-up started at 9am after a briefing. Each group
of volunteers was lead by a team leader and was given brooms,
gloves and bags. The volunteers then combed the beach, picking
up garbage and separating them as recyclable and non-recyclable
material.
Teaching our children
Volunteers ranged in age from 3 to 65 years old. For some,
it was a family affair. A tourist at the beach shared, "It
is not common for people to take their own initiative to clean
the beach. Doing beach clean-ups with children is a good way
to teach them about social conscience."
The beach clean-up ended at noon with three
town council members thanking the volunteers in person. Compared
with the seven truckloads of rubbish collected during the
first beach clean-up in 2003, the three truckloads collected
this year indicated a significant improvement at the beach.
Tzu Chi's beach clean-up events have gained
approval from many other local organizations, that have also
started to hold similar activities. This in turn has become
an encouragement to the Tzu Chi volunteers.
140
volunteers participate in the beach clean-up, collecting three
truckloads of rubbish.
All
volunteers, old and young, are actively involved in the beach
clean-up.
