Tzu Chi Eases Medical Needs in Vietnam
Poverty
in Tien Giang province, southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, is
the biggest obstacle for most residents in terms of medical
care.
Taiwan Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi
Foundation (Tzu Chi), together with members from its subsidiary
Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA), strives
to provide free medical clinics for those too poor to seek
treatments.
To date, over 26 thousands patients have
benefited from the free clinics hosted by Tzu Chi and TIMA.
On the 16th April 2006, 867 local patients
received medical treatments through Tzu Chi's fifth free clinic
in the area.
27 doctors and 34 medical personnel from
seven specialties were at the scene: general medicine, pediatric,
eastern medicine, otolaryngology and dermatology.
The locals, hampered by poverty, were unable
to receive basic medical needs such as cavity treatments.
The lack of hygiene awareness further worsens their condition.
Many traveled long distance to arrive at
the free clinic, either by ferries or motorcycles. To ease
the stress, 160 Tzu Chi volunteers were at the scene, providing
various services such as light meals, messages as well as
keeping company with the elders and physically-challenged
throughout the diagnosis.
In addition to the free clinic, 491 recipients
also benefited from Tzu Chi relief good distribution. The
recipient received 10 kg of rice, 1 kg of sugar, 1 liter of
oil, 1 large mosquito net, instant noodles, and toothpaste
and tooth brushes.
Many of the participated doctors were local
doctors from Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA).
They expressed their gratitude for Tzu Chi for providing opportunities
for them to take part in this meaningful event.
"I've participated in Tzu Chi free
clinic since 2001...Now that Tzu Chi bringing Great Love into
the rural areas by serving these underprivileged, really touches
me. I hope more medical professionals will join Tzu Chi and
together serve these patients." Dr. Li Wen-Ming.
Aside from the more general illnesses,
a few challenging medical cases were identified, including
a six year old boy with several heart defects. Tzu Chi volunteers
have included these cases into their long-term assistance
program and will follow-up on their treatment.
