Swift medical and food aids to Volcano displaced residents

More than 22,000 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes since the eruption of Indonesia's Mount Merapi, according to media reports. Local volunteers of Taiwan Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation (Tzu Chi) have brought humanitarian care to more than 7,000 residents since the government gave the first evacuation order.

On the 9th May, the government gave evacuation orders as Mount Merapi showed signs of possible eruption. Tzu Chi volunteers swiftly visited the evacuation centres and distributed eight tons rice to central kitchens. 6,000 displaced residents across seven locations spread over three counties benefited.

The eruption on 5:50AM 15th May signalled further needs for relief efforts. On the same day, Tzu Chi volunteers brought vegetable and fruits to 1,114 evacuees at three different locations.

An evaluation team consists of four volunteers are scheduled to arrive at the Magelang District on the 18th May. Medical supplies consisting of 5,000 eye drops, cough medicine, pain killers and masks each are also to be handed out by the volunteers. Further relief efforts will be formulated as the evaluation team returns from the eruption site with more information.
