Tzu Chi Java Earthquake Disaster Relief:
Logistics and Relief Efforts Update
Indonesia, 29 May - Up till
now, volunteers of Taiwan Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation
Indonesia Branch have served 265 patients in the Earthquake
disaster area of Bantul. In addition
to the clinic setup at Imogiri, the volunteers are providing
mobile medical care through an ambulance to the Middle Java
Earthquake victims.
Currently 42 Tzu Chi volunteers are on
site, including six doctors and seven medical professionals.
Most patients sustained fractures from
the Earthquake. These injuries were treated and plastered
by the Tzu Chi medical team. Other victims have complained
of skin irritations, headaches, gastric discomfort and sleep
disorders. The Tzu Chi volunteers noticed that while some
of the patients interacted with the volunteers, most are still
too traumatized.
The local media has now reported 5,010
people killed by the Earthquake, with another 1,907 critically
injured and 1,721 with minor injuries.
After meeting with the Bantul authorities
at noon, the vice CEO and other volunteers of Tzu Chi Foundation
assessed the disaster area. Many of the relief goods have
now arrived at the disaster site and are being delivered to
the victims.

40 tons of rice will be arriving at the
disaster site on 30 May. Originally scheduled with 100 tons
of rice, only portion of this first batch could be delivered
due to the shortage of freight trucks.
Tzu Chi volunteers have been providing
the sincerest care to the victims, treating them with respect
and patience. Volunteers have reported that many elderly women
were traumatized by the whole disaster, as they appeared panic
stricken upon entering the clinic. The medical team soothed
these unsettled hearts with patience, "Please trust us,
we will provide you with the best care possible, and we are
here to help you."
Currently, more volunteers are scheduled
to arrive from Jakarta while ten volunteers from Surabaya
are arriving tonight.
