EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Providing Comfort for the Soul
On
January 15, 2001, two days after the first earthquake, Tzu
Chi's International Disaster Relief Assessment Team was dispatched
to El Salvador. They accompanied 28 members of Taiwan's International
Association for Search and Rescue (SAR). On route from Taiwan
to El Salvador, the two teams stopped in Los Angeles, where
U.S. Tzu Chi volunteers greeted them with 251 pieces of luggage
filled with equipment, medical supplies and other emergency
supplies.
Next, Tzu Chi volunteers and the Tzu Chi
International Medical Association (TIMA) doctors and nurses
arrived from all over the world and established medical stations
in Colon, El Congo, and Cuidad Arce. Over 300 Tzu Chi volunteers
participated in a total of five relief missions in January
and February. On these missions, volunteers traveled to Ateos,
Sacacoyo, El Carmen, San Martin, Verapaz, Tepetitan and Guadalupe.
Tzu Chi doctors treated 10,000 Salvadorians and Tzu Chi volunteers
distributed $350,000 worth of food and supplies.
GREAT LOVE VILLAGE

Construction began in February 2001 for
the Sacacoyo Great Love Village. The village, encompassing
340 new homes, is ready for moving-in. Tzu Chi also started
the reconstruction of Chanmico in December 2001. The new communities
will have homes, schools, community centers, health clinics,
parks and playgrounds. Homes are given to earthquake victims
from the original or nearbyvillages who do not have means
to rebuild their homes or to relocate.
All
new homes are built to strict seismic code. Running water,
electricity, flush toilets, and showers are all standard.
In accordance with Tzu Chi's emphasis on environmental protection,
the roads and sidewalks will be made of all natural materials.
