Day 2 - Tzu Chi USA Late Night News Update

Tzu Chi New York Chapter (14 volunteers):
Reported on 9/12/01 11:56 p.m. EST

1.

Right now, Tzu Chi New York and New Jersey volunteers are on their way home. They just finished sending supplies (water and First-Aid supplies) to the disaster area.

2. Tzu Chi volunteers, through the help of sister Huey-Ru (a dentist), were able to enter the disaster area with the Salvation Army.
3. Tzu Chi volunteers used ice to freeze bottled water because the disaster area needs ice water.
4.

Tzu Chi will go into disaster area daily with Salvation Army again to send ice water.

5. Next trip into disaster area is scheduled for tomorrow (Thursdays 9/13) noon (Eastern standard time)
6. Dr. Liao and Dr. Yao went along with the volunteers to the disaster area.
7. Supplies brought in from Tzu Chi New York:
a) 4 cases of Hydrogen-peroxide
b) 1 large case of pain-killers
c) 6 cases of alcohol
d) 1 large case of band-aid
e) gloves
f) 30 cases of water (20 bottles in each case)

Tzu Chi is also sending in names of doctors, nurses, and construction workers to Red Cross.


Tzu Chi New Jersey Chapter (19 volunteers):
Reported on 9/12/01 11:56 p.m. EST

1.

2 cars went into the disaster area from New Jersey.

2. They brought in 110 cases of ice water (each case contains 32 bottles), and also lots of ice to make the water cold.
3. Disaster area needs iced water the most; the water has to be ice cold!
4. All volunteers had to go through 4 levels of security check to get to the main disaster area.
5. Volunteers reported that there are portable bathrooms at disaster area.
6. Volunteers reported that there are documents, trash, and dust all over the place in the disaster area.
7. Brother Ji-Hong suggested we get permit with city mayor to go to disaster area, so that we can help out more and go into the disaster area more freely (other volunteers agreed to this suggestion)
