Day 4- Tzu Chi USA News Update
Reported on 9/14/01 9:00 p.m. EST

11:59 a.m.
New York
Tzu Chi volunteers are looking into working with the Red Cross at various relief stations. They found out that since the Salvation Army is providing food, Tzu Chi volunteers are now finding out if any Chinese translators are needed. Our volunteers can easily assist in this way.

At this time, there are sufficient amount of food and necessities at the disaster site. Tzu Chi volunteers continue to support rescuers by supplying them with ice water.

12:30 p.m.
New York
A friend of a Boston Tzu Chi volunteer, an emergency room doctor at New York University Medical Center, is planning to take a group of New York Tzu Chi volunteers into the disaster site to help any rescuers who need medical attention. Because the temperature in New York has dipped into 56 degrees, doctors are moving in to provide any needed medical aid. The New York University Medical Center doctor is asking Tzu Chi to supply additional asthma, antibiotics, and cold medication because the hospital's supply is running low. New York's Tzu Chi Chapter is looking into acquiring the needed medical medications.

1:37 p.m.
USA Main Office
The local Red Cross chapter is currently overwhelmed with the number of people calling to donate blood. Red Cross will now forward overflow calls to our U.S. Main Office. We will continue to take basic blood donation information.

We have started to comfort and console victims and family members. We are gathering information to build a list of all possible victims. This will helps us care for each family on a more personal basis. The New York Chapter has already begun.

5:17 p.m.
New York

New York Tzu Chi volunteers just delivered two giant pots of hot soup to Salvation Army rescuers at ground zero. This evening they will deliver more soup the St. Vincent Hospital, one of the closest hospitals to the disaster site.

6:00 p.m.
Dallas

In Dallas, Tzu Chi volunteers have been donating blood. The Dallas chapter is working with other local non-profit organizations to purchase supplies such as latex gloves and surgical masks for New York.

6:00 p.m.
U. S. Main Office

The Tzu Chi Disaster Relief Fund has been set up. We've received many generous donations from people all over the U.S. So far, we even had two calls from China, from compassionate individuals who wanted to not only make monetary donations but also to volunteer their time.

As of 6:00PM tonight, the US main office has received 24 requests to local family members and friends.
