A
press conference was held today outside the Monrovia City
Hall. Thanks to the long-time relationship that our Southern
California Chapter has had with the Monrovia Police Department,
the Monrovia Police Chief is working with Tzu Chi to help
get financial gifts into the hands of the families of the
New York City fire fighters and police officers that perished
on September 11th. Fourteen Tzu Chi volunteers and over twenty
representatives from the city of Monrovia including police,
fire fighters, city council, public works and park services
all took part in this press conference. Monrovia Police Chief,
the Mayor of Monrovia, Tzu Chi U.S. Executive Vice President,
and other Monrovia Council Members all spoke at this press
conference.
Monrovia
Police Chief told the press that this press conference is
to let more people understand Tzu Chi as a charitable organization.
Second, the chief wanted to thank Tzu Chi and stress that
Tzu Chi always gives financial support directly into the hands
of people who need the assistance; in this case, Tzu Chi is
offering emergency financial assistance to families of the
New York City and Pentagon fire fighters and police officers.
Third, he emphasized that this is Tzu Chi's regular work and
that he is proud to have an organization such as Tzu Chi to
have its U.S. headquarters in Monrovia.
