Community Volunteers
|
 |
A major typhoon struck Taiwan in July of 1996
and caused widespread damages. Master Cheng Yen advocated the
idea of community-based service to quickly respond to local
needs when disasters arise.
To advance the idea of community service,
Master reorganized the Commissioners according to different
groups based on communities. She encouraged the Commissioners
in each community to mobilize local residents to foster cooperative
spirits of neighborhood and look out for each other. Through
various activities of community service, the residents not only
know each other better but also are better prepared to care
for each other in the events of disasters. This way the idea
of community volunteers is carried out and the ideals and spirits
of great love that reflect what Tzu Chi stands for can be embedded
among communities, making this a better world.
