Entering
India
Hsuan Tsang crossed the Khyber Pass and came to Gandh?ra, an important gateway to northwest India, in what is now northern Pakistan. This was once the administrative center of the Kushan Dynasty, and it was also where Gandh?ran art originated. When Hsuan Tsang visited this place, the art of Gandh?ra had already entered a period of decline. But Buddhism had not disappeared altogether, and there were still some Buddhist temples and monks in the area. After visiting relics of Gandh?ran art, Hsuan Tsang departed from Pakistan for Kashmir.
