Journey to the West on the Silk Road
A photographic chronicle retracing Hsuan Tsang's heroic 7th century voyage

The pilgrims soak themselves in the Ganges River and pray to the sun in the east. Hindus believe that the river is very sacred and pure; if one can bathe in it, one will be cleansed of all crimes. If the ashes of the deceased can be cast into the river, the deceased can ascend to heaven. (Photograph by Wang Jia-fei)
