The pilgrims soak themselves in the Ganges River and pray
to the sun in the east. Hindus believe that the river is
very sacred and pure; if one can bathe in it, one will be
cleansed of all crimes. If the ashes of the deceased can
be cast into the river, the deceased can ascend to heaven.
